Jazz in the Jungle 05.27 ft. Jelando Johnson

Jelando Johnson is a Houston bassist, composer, arranger, and producer who performs with the easy authority of someone who has spent years listening as carefully as he plays — eclectic by design, he draws freely from jazz, soul, R&B, funk, and Latin grooves.

His debut EP, The Journey, takes its name from the philosophy that runs through everything he does: "Life is not a destination, it's a journey." His music is uplifting with an arranger's care for how every voice in the band finds its space.

Jelando is also the visionary behind The Crusaders Experience— a band born in Houston in the early '60s and shaped by Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Wayne Henderson, and Stix Hooper. Surrounded by some of the city's most respected players, he carries that lineage forward with a sound that bridges bebop, soul, jazz-funk, and modern groove.

For one late-May night inside Eden's living jungle, that Houston groove comes home to us.
